Part 393
San Francisco
Arriving in San Francisco, “We’re here Heath,” Jarrod announces as the train comes to a complete stop.
Glancing out the window, “There’s Ed,” Gene announces.
“Oh,” Jarrod replies, “Good,” as they grab their belongings.
Climbing down off the platform, “Heath,” Nick asks, “Does it look the same as it did when you saw it last time?”
“I don’t remember this piece Nick,” Heath mentions as he scans the scenery noticing the various buildings along each side of the tracks.
“Perhaps,” Nick notes, “They added this after you were here.”
“That could be,” Heath replies, “If we go towards the water I could give you a better idea of that answer.”
“Well” Jarrod says “San Francisco has been growing within the last couple of years. It’s very possible that some of this was not here at the time that you
were.”
“You’ve been here before Heath?” Audra asks.
“Once,” Heath admits.
“Jarrod,” Ed calls out, “Nick,” as he greets them upon coming over to them, “Heath” then glancing over at Audra and Gene, “Audra, Gene,” he then inquires, “You brought them along with you?”
“We met them in Stockton” Jarrod says “As it was coming here it passed by there.”
“And let’s just say,” Nick brings up, “That it was unexpected; that they are here and let’s leave it at that.”
“Fair enough,” Ed replies.
“We got your wire,” Jarrod mentions.
“So I see,” Ed replies.
“And we got here as fast as we could,” Nick says.
“And,” Jarrod mentions, “I see you got my wire.”
“I did,” Ed admits.
Glancing about, “Where’s Bill?” Nick inquires.
“Left him at the house,” Ed mentions.
“Any new developments,” Jarrod asks.
“No,” Ed answers then glancing over at Heath asks, “What happened?”
Taking hold of his arm, “Ran into a little situation,” Heath mentions.
“Are you okay?” Ed asks.
“I’m fine,” Heath replies.
“Speaking of which,” Jarrod suggests, “Nick how about if you and Ed head over to my place while I go and grab the doctor?”
“Good idea,” Ed answers.
“Just what I was thinking,” Nick says.
“I don’t need a doctor,” Heath protests.
“Yes you do Heath,” Jarrod tells him, “I want him to take a look at you.”
“And so do I,” Nick informs him.
“We’ll meet back at the house” Jarrod says “And talk further when we get there.”
“I think that’s best,” Ed replies.
“So do I” Nick mentions.
“And until I get there” Jarrod says “How about getting the rooms ready for everyone?”
“Sure thing,” Nick replies.
“We’re going to have to double or triple up,” Ed mentions.
“We’ll figure it all out when I get there,” Jarrod notes.
“See you back at the house,” Nick then turns and says to Heath, “Come on,” and as he and the rest of the family goes with Ed back to Jarrod’s using the waiting buggy while Jarrod goes to get the doctor.
Stockton
After grabbing the train the men each place their gear up on top and take their seats. Sitting next to one another as the whistle blows one last time they watch as they pull out of the station on its way to San Francisco.
“Well” Davy says “We’re on our way now” to Chad sitting on the side of him.
“So true,” Chad responds as he, along with the rest of the men: Vinnie, Jack, Hank, Mike, Davy, Barrett, Willard, Browne, Spot, Oscar, Austin, Sam, Jim, Johnny, Chris, Don, Joe, Pete and Alan watch as they depart from the Stockton train station.
San Francisco
As Ed pulls up to the somewhat secluded ranch that is enclosed by a fence surrounded by the entire home, “Is this Jarrod’s?” Heath asks in awe as he is looking at the house from the entrance behind the gate.
“This is it Heath,” Gene replies.
“What do you think?” Audra asks.
Noting the two gates which lead to the front walk with an archway over the closed iron-gate with the name Barkley embedded into the top of a wooden board, “It’s big,” Heath admits, “I will say that.”
“That it is and just keep this in mind that for our brother Jarrod, Heath,” Nick notes, “He doesn’t do anything small.”
“I guess not,” Heath replies.
“And look,” Gene mentions, “He even has the Barkley name up on top.”
“I see that,” Heath comments, “Makes it easier to find his house if you didn’t know where to look.”
Nick jumping out and opening the gate, Ed drives the buggy up to the front walk as he brings it to a complete stop Nick asks of Heath “Want to look around a bit?”
“I’d like that,” Heath admits.
“Just for a minute or two,” Nick says, “You need to be resting. Audra, why don’t you show him around a bit and Gene help me with taking care of the suitcases while I go seek out Bill.”
“Sure thing,” they both reply.
“And while you’re both doing that” Ed says “How about I take care of the buggy?”
“You do that,” Nick states and while he assists Audra out of the buggy, Gene and Heath climb out on their own and upon Gene and Nick proceeding onto the front door carrying the suitcases; Audra begins escorting Heath around the premises while Ed drives the buggy towards the barn.
Walking in the front door Nick calls out to Bill who replies, “I’m right here Nick,” as he comes out of the kitchen, “Sorry about your Mother.”
“Anything new?” Nick asks.
“No,” Bill replies “Not thus far.”
“You have no idea,” Gene joins in listening, “Of who took her?”
“None,” Bill answers, “We weren’t here when it happened.”
“You mean they took her,” Nick asks, “From here?”
“Yes,” Bill replies, “Friday night when we left for a couple minutes and then when we came back we found out she was gone and in the morning we found the note.”
“Where is the note?” Nick asks.
“I left it with Jim,” Bill answers.
“Could you tell us what exactly it said,” Nick inquires.
Reiterating what the letter stated Bill mentions how the money was to be broken down into 20, 10 and five dollar denominations and out of sequence, “Blasted,” Nick lets out.
“What’s the matter?” Bill asks, “Jim is getting the money ready. We got a wire saying he’s on his way.”
“Yes,” Nick replies, “I know, but they want the money in lower denomination. We have some of the money on us, but it’s not all in the sequences as they stated.”
“What are we going to do?” Gene asks.
“Did they say anything else?” Nick inquires.
“They said,” Bill mentions, “They will be contacting us 72 hours later of how they wanted the money delivered.”
“So that means,” Nick brings up, “They will be sending another note.”
“They should be,” Bill mentions, “Anytime now.”
“Then,” Nick says, “We’ll have to find a way to get the money broken down into the sequence they want them in.”
“How are we gonna do that?” Gene asks, “And will we have time?”
“We better hope we do,” Nick says, “Come on,” he then tells Gene.
“To where,” Gene asks.
“To get the rooms ready for all of us,” Nick says.
“Does Jarrod have enough room for all of us?” Gene asks.
“That is why,” Nick brings up, “We’ll have to be doubling up. But for right now it’s the best we can do on such short notice.”
“Agreed,” Bill replies.
“However” Nick says “Audra will get a room to herself; at least until we are able to find Mother. Come on” as he leads the way up the stairs to the top landing.
Outside
As Audra is showing Heath around various areas of the ranch, she first starts off with the barn to which they observe Ed unhitching the buggy and placing the horses back in their stalls.
Back at the house
As Gene and Nick enter one of the bedrooms, “Well,” Gene says, “Look at this! Someone else has been sleeping here,” noting the unmade bed.
“Bill?” Nick asks, “Who else has been sleeping here?”
“I forgot to tell you,” Bill replies, “When we first arrived I did something stupid.”
“What’s that?” Nick asks.
“I went out on my own” Bill mentions “And while looking for clues to the Grizzly Bear Saloon, I went to the waterfront and after talking to a couple men there I went into one of the back alleys and was watching from one of the buildings men being loaded up into a wagon. I was about to go and follow them when someone knocked me over the head” placing his hand on the back of his head “And when I woke up I was looking up at a bunch of kids who somehow rescued me from the people who from what they were telling me were going to throw me into the ocean.”
“Are you okay?” Nick asks concerned.
“I’m okay,” Bill answers.
“What does that have to do with who’s been sleeping here?” Nick wanted to know.
“At the moment” Bill answers “They are without parents so I brought them here with me.”
“Where are they now?” Gene asks.
“For the moment” Bill mentions “They are next door with the Dentons’ Jarrod’s neighbor.”
“Where are their parents?” Nick asks.
“One of their fathers’ has been taken aboard one of the ships, Kyle the oldest is waiting for it to come in and rescue him, the other from what they tell me is dead and their mothers are also gone.”
“How many are there?” Nick inquires.
“Nine,” Bill says.
“But they come,” Ed joins in as he walks in on the conversation, “From two different families.”
“And,” Bill mentions, “That is some of the reason why we weren’t here when your mother was taken away.”
“What do you mean by that?” Nick asks.
“He means,” Ed says, “That Kyle, the oldest left the house and went looking for someone we went to follow and find out what he was doing out.”
“Leaving your mother alone at the house,” Bill mentions, “With the younger kids when we went out.”
“And,” Ed adds, “While we were gone, that is when they came to get her. Sorry Nick,” glancing over at Gene, “Sorry Gene,” he says, “But we had no idea that someone was paying attention to us.”
“We’re sorry” Bill adds “That we didn’t use our brains a little more intelligently than we did when we first arrived. If we did then maybe none of this would’ve happened.”
“I guess,” Nick hisses, “As much as I would just love to belt the both of you for what you did, I guess it’s too late for that now.”
“If it would help,” Bill mentions, “If it could change things then you could belt us all you like; it was our ignorance that got the best of us.”
“I guess,” Nick adds, “There’s not much else we could do at the moment.”
Ed informs him, “We’ll do all we can with helping you get her back safely” placing his hand on his shoulder.
“Let’s finish” Nick says “Getting the rooms ready for the family; come on Gene.”
Part 394
While they continue working together in getting the rooms ready Audra is busy showing Heath around Jarrod’s ranch. She is now showing him the annual and perennial flower gardens along with the beautiful rock island that is in the center of the property.
Continuing on they move to the stone wall that runs along the perimeter of the grounds lined with the massive oak trees, followed by the pond that borders the trees and upon noticing the various colored fish swimming about the water, “Jarrod,” Heath brings up, “Sure does like his fish, doesn’t he?”
“How could you tell?” Audra smiling asks.
“It’s very obvious,” Heath replies.
“You’re very observant,” Audra notes.
Returning the smile “Well,” Heath replies, “Once again it doesn’t take a genius to know that about him seeing he also has various kinds of fish back home in Jarrod’s pond.”
“That it sure doesn’t,” Audra says.
Then as they continue walking about and going further back something that catches Heath’s attention asks, “Is this his too?” looking at the train that is overlooking the lake which is facing the green field to its right that stops just several feet from the car.
“It is,” Audra admits, “This is what you call his pride and joy.”
“I could see why,” Heath answers, “It’s beautiful.”
“As you could see,” Audra says, “Jarrod doesn’t do anything small.”
“I guess not,” Heath replies, “Does it work?”
“Not yet,” Audra mentions, “But as soon as he gets more time he does plan on getting it up and running.”
“I would love to see that,” Heath points out.
“So would I,” Audra replies, “And I think we better start heading back; you are suppose to be resting, I think I took you around longer than the minute or two.”
“Very well,” Heath says, and turning around they head back.
As they are passing by the fence they hear, “Hey,” and as they stop quickly they turn around to find a little boy about 6 years of age standing there, “Who are you?” he says.
“I am Audra,” Audra quickly answers, “And I’m Heath,” Heath answering, “Who are you?” he asks the boy who responds, “Noah. What happened to your arm?”
“Had an accident,” Heath informs him.
Hearing Noah’s voice, “Noah,” Billy calls out, “Who are you talking to?”
Glancing over to Billy who is coming up behind him, “Audra and Heath” answers.
As Billy joins Noah and says, “Hello,” Audra and Heath reply, “Hello,” back.
Noah then mentions, “This here is Billy, he lives here.”
“So we see,” Heath replies.
“Yes,” Audra mentions, “We’ve met,” then turning to Billy she says, “My, you’ve grown Billy.”
“And so have you,” Billy notes, “The last time we’ve seen each other was a couple years ago.”
“Was it that long ago?” Audra says, “I guess maybe it has. But I don’t remember Noah being here before.”
“He doesn’t live here,” Billy mentions.
“He doesn’t?” Audra asks.
“No,” Billy answers, “For the moment he is just staying with us.”
“Really,” Audra says, “How about we resume this later on we do need to be getting back?”
“Yeah okay,” Billy replies, “It’s nice seeing you again.”
“Same here,” Audra mentions.
As Audra and Heath resume their direction in heading back towards the house Kimmy catching sight of Noah and Billy says “Hey!”
“Hey, what?” Noah asks.
“Don’t you know,” Kimmy says, “You shouldn’t be talking to strangers.”
“They’re not strangers,” Billy mentions, “At least Audra isn’t.”
“Oh?” Kimmy asks.
“She’s Jarrod Barkley’s sister,” Billy mentions, “The one who owns the house.”
Standing beside Kimmy “She must know her mother has been taken,” Diane
Denton surmises.
“That’s what I believe she’s doing here,” Billy notes, “Pa did say they were on their way.”
As they begin turning around and start to head back for the house they hear the sound of a horse coming closer, “I hear something,” Noah announces.
“So do I” Kimmy mentions.
“Hey look!” Billy announces, as they catch sight of the rider moving towards the Barkleys gate.
“What’s he doing?” Kimmy asks.
“Looks like,” Noah mentions, “He’s dropping something off,” and as they continue to watch they see him spin quickly around and leave, “Hey!” he then says as he gets a better look at the man.
“What?” Billy replies.
“That man,” Noah says, “Looks like the man that took Mrs. Barkley.”
“You sure?” Diane asks.
“I am sure,” Noah replies.
“He’s right,” Kimmy says, “That is him; at least one of them.”
“I remember him,” Noah mentions, “When he came into the house and we ran up the stairs and out the window to come here.”
“Come on,” Diane suggests, “Let’s go take a look,” and as they reach the inside of Jarrod Barkley’s gate they see a duffle bag on the ground and upon picking it up a piece of paper falls out.
Quickly grabbing it, “Hey look,” Billy mentions, “A note.”
“What’s it say?” Kimmy asks.
“Dear Mr. Barkley,” Billy reads, “Here is the bag we are supplying you with.”
“It’s the ransom note,” Diane mentions.
Just then hearing Ray Denton calling out to them, “Hey Pa,” Diane Denton says, “We’re over here.”
Quickly going over to him, “Hey Pa,” Billy announces, “Look what we found.”
Taking it and upon reading it, “Where did you get this?” Ray asks.
“A man,” Noah mentions, “Just dropped it off and left.”
Diane says, “It’s the ransom note.”
“He’s one of the men,” Kimmy mentions, “That took Mrs. Barkley away.”
“We were just about to give this to Audra,” Billy says.
“Audra?” Ray asks.
“Audra Barkley,” Billy replies, “Jarrod Barkley’s sister.”
“They’re here?” Ray asks.
“We believe so,” Billy answers, “At least Audra is; she was just here with her brother Heath.”
“You kids,” Ray says, “Go back to the house; I’ll take it to them.”
And as Ray quickly takes the duffle bag and the note over to the Barkleys’ the children doing as they’re told head back for their house.
Going inside the house and standing in the front room, “Boy, Howdy!” Heath says, “Is this really Jarrod’s?”
“It is,” Audra answers, “What do you think?”
“Wow!” Heath answers “I can’t believe it” as he is looking at the entire interior from where he is standing “It’s just as big on the inside as it is on the outside and I think if it was any bigger I think the house would be surrounding the yard.”
“Once again,” Audra says, “Our big brother doesn’t do anything small.”
“I could see that,” Heath retorts.
“Want me to show you around?” Audra asks.
“Sure,” Heath replies.
“Come on,” Audra says and as she begins taking him around the house she starts off with the formal dining room that is right off the entranceway to their left passing by the living room and then taking them into the eat-in kitchen.
Exiting the kitchen and returning to the front room they move to the stairwell and begin ascending the steps taking them up to the top landing.
Showing him around to the bedrooms Audra brings him to Jarrod’s master bedroom first where he sees the French doors overseeing the large sitting window seat, the tray ceiling with inside and outside crown molding, a spacious walk-in closet and a separate linen closet.
“I can’t get over it,” Heath says.
“What’s that?” Audra asks.
“This room,” Heath replies, “Not to mention this entire house is so beautiful. This is Jarrod’s own personal bedroom?”
“This is. After all he is the king of his house” smiling says “King of his castle.”
“I know,” Heath says, “But this house” shaking his head, “I just can’t get over it. I didn’t think Jarrod was into something like this.”
“As you see,” Audra mentions, “Jarrod is a man of many different hidden surprises.”
“And,” Heath retorts, “You’re not kidding!”
He then notices that it has a double vanity with granite countertops, cherry cabinets, with mirrors made up of tumbled onyx, copper fixtures and a built in bathroom with a porcelain tub, as well as a beautiful alabaster chandelier and then catches sight of the walls glazed tissue that adds texture.
Hearing their voices “Well” Nick walking in asks “How did it go?”
“Went very well,” Audra answers.
“Did you like what you see?” Nick asks.
“I did,” Heath replies.
“I was just giving Heath a tour of the house,” Audra mentions.
“I see that” Nick replies “And how about if I show you (Heath) where your bedroom is going to be,” motioning with his hand.
“Sure,” Heath answers, “Why not?”
“Come on,” Nick says, “Audra, why don’t you go and help Gene with getting the rest of the rooms ready.”
Responding “Sure thing,” Audra goes down the hall while Nick escorts Heath down the hall to the 4th bedroom.
As Audra enters the bedroom Gene is working on he looks up and says, “Hey Audra.”
“What?” Audra asks.
“Do you know about the children?” Gene says.
“What children?” Audra asks.
“The ones that have been staying here,” Gene mentions, “That for the moment are staying next door with the Dentons.”
“That explains,” Audra says, “Noah.”
“Noah?” Gene mimics.
“I just met him,” Audra replies, “And he said something about just staying there.”
Reaching the fourth bedroom, “Well,” Nick asks, “What do you think?”
“Not bad,” Heath answers.
“For the time being,” Nick says, “While we’re all doubling up this will be your room.”
“Who will be sleeping in here with me?” Heath asks.
“Gene,” Nick replies, “And for right now, how about trying it out and lie down for a spell.”
With his eyes widening, “Lie down,” Heath says, “I don’t need to be lying down.”
“I hate to be differing with you on this Heath,” Nick mentions, “But I am afraid you do. I promised the doctor you would be resting and I intend to keep my word. You had enough of a tour of the house and the ranch as it is and what you didn’t see yet you could see when the doctor comes and takes a look at it and says otherwise. But in the meantime, do as I say and lie down.”
“What about Mother?” Heath asks.
“There is nothing thus far,” Nick replies, “As soon as I hear anything I will pass it along to you. Right now we are waiting on a note to find out about how they want the money delivered. So,” he tells him, “How about getting into bed?”
While looking down the hallway “How many bedrooms are there in here” Heath asks.
“Jarrod,” Nick replies, “Has 5 bedrooms.”
“So,” Heath asks, “Who is sharing with whom?”
“For the time being,” Nick answers, “Seeing we all have to double up, you will be sleeping in here with Gene, I will be sharing with Bill, Audra gets a room to herself however and Jarrod will be sharing his bedroom with Ed.”
“That’s four,” Heath mentions.
“Uncle Jim,” Nick states, “Is on his way, we’ll be needing a room for him.”
“What about the men?” Heath asks, “That will be coming with him?”
Just then hearing a knock on the door Nick followed by Heath quickly exit the room. As Ed is opening the door they catch sight of Ray Denton in the entrance who says, “Ed is Jarrod here?”
“Not at the moment,” Ed replies, “However his brothers Nick and Heath are.”
“Mr. Barkley,” Ray says to them as they are coming down the steps.
“Yes,” Nick replies.
Ray says “Here,” handing him the note.
Quickly taking the note, “Dear Mr. Barkley,” Nick reads.
“Is it the ransom note?” Audra asks.
Watching and listening to Nick as he is reading it, “Here is the bag we are supplying you with.”
“I believe so,” Heath informs her.
Part 395
Nick continues reading the note out loud, “You are to place the money inside it,” referring to the empty bag Ray is still holding, “Find a delivery person who may want to make a few extra dollars supplied by you of course. Tell him to go down Powell Street then to take a left at Pacific Avenue. He is then to take Hyde Street and keep going down the road until he reaches Taylor Street to where he’ll come to a cross road of California and Clay Street. From there he should proceed on and ride exactly two miles past that crossroad and stop at Nob Hill. Look for a peculiar brown tree hung over a fortress ranch that is up at Bingham’s Point. There you will place the bag inside it and leave. Now as soon as we verify that you haven’t been stupid enough to try to set a trap for us we’ll bring you some new information on how to find your mother. But we’re warning you Mr. Barkley. We know you don’t like little people telling you what to do but I advise you to do as you’re told that means don’t hire anybody. No cops, no federal agents, no nothing because there is no one anywhere who can help your mother if you don’t do exactly what we say. And I mean absolutely no one. You are to be there by exactly 6 pm no later.”
“Damn!” Nick lets out.
“What are we gonna do?” Gene asks overhearing.
“Deliver the money,” Nick replies.
“It’s not all here,” Audra brings up, “And Uncle Jim won’t be here until at least after 7.”
“They don’t know that,” Nick states, “We’ll have to give them what we have. Maybe it’ll be enough; maybe it’ll be enough to stall until we find out how to get to Mother safely. Right now they hold the upper hand.”
“Who’s gonna deliver it?” Audra asks.
Just then Jarrod walks through the door and upon seeing the family gathered, “I brought the doctor,” referring to him coming in behind him he then asks “What’s going on? Why is everyone standing around?”
“The ransom note,” Gene says.
Taking the note from Nick and after reading it, “It needs to be delivered by 6:00,” Gene mentions.
“Who’s going to deliver it?” Audra asks again.
“I’ll do it,” Heath volunteers.
“You can’t Heath,” Jarrod followed by Nick tell him, “Here go with the doctor. Let him take a look at you,” Jarrod informs him.
“I’ll go,” Bill volunteers.
“You can’t either,” Ed says.
“Yes, I can,” Bill replies, “Why not? I’m the logical choice here.”
“How’s that?” Ed asks.
“They need a delivery man,” Bill mentions, “If they see anybody but a delivery person they may try to do something. They more than likely will be watching what we’re doing. Right now they hold all the cards as Nick mentioned.”
“I don’t know if you’re fully up to it,” Ed replies, “I’ll go do it.”
“Ed,” Jarrod asks, “You sure you want to do this?”
“Yes Jarrod,” Ed replies, “I do and if the situation was reversed wouldn’t you want to be the one doing it?”
“You know I would be,” Jarrod points out, “Without hesitation.”
“Then,” Ed replies, “It’s settled. I’ll deliver it.”
“Before we go delivering anything,” Gene brings up, “It’s not all here. They also want it broken down into 20’s, 10’s and 5’s. What are we gonna do about that?”
“He’s right about that,” Nick mentions.
“So,” Ed brings up, “We’ll need a game plan.”
“Agreed,” Jarrod says, “And seeing Uncle Jim won’t be arriving until way after 7 when the next train comes in we will have to first hope they will take what we do have on hand already. Banks are closed so there isn’t anyway to get any more money until tomorrow.”
“That much we do know,” Bill notes “So, the first order of business will be to get the money broken down.”
“Precisely,” Jarrod replies.
“I’d like to help,” Ray offers.
“Thank you,” Jarrod says.
Placing his hand on his shoulder, “No thanks are necessary,” Ray replies, “It’s called being a good neighbor.”
“Thank goodness,” Nick quips, “10,000 of it was broken down already. All we have to work on is the other 10,000.”
“Mere chicken feed,” Heath retorts.
“I know it’s not going to be easy,” Nick says, “But it has to be done.”
“True,” Heath replies.
“Well,” Jarrod then says, “Seeing we don’t have much time, Doctor, I know you don’t know much about what is going on but I will be leaving you with Heath, Audra and Gene. And Ray, if you won’t mind could you stick around and assist the doctor with anything that he may need.”
“Certainly,” Ray replies.
“Where are you gonna go,” Gene asks, “To get the money broken down?”
“At the moment,” Jarrod brings up, “I think our best place to go will be the waterfront.”
“Agreed,” Ed replies.
“You better be careful,” Ray insists.
“And stay together,” Heath tells them.
Upon opening the door “We will,” Nick says.
“We’ll meet back here in an hour,” Jarrod states, “Let’s get started.”
And with that, Jarrod, Ed, Nick, and Bill go out the door with the doctor asking where a good place for him to do his examination on Heath would be. As Audra suggests upstairs to Heath’s temporary bedroom she is encouraged in leading the way up to the top landing.
Going out the door Jarrod distributes the larger bills to Nick, Ed and Bill then after quickly going inside the barn they saddle up four horses and upon mounting up they head for the gate and from there they start going down the road which will be leading them to the waterfront.
As they ride side by side Ed and Bill fills Nick and Jarrod in about the children how they know the area and have been helping them with finding out who has their mother as well as all the streets they went up and down at the time someone must’ve spotted them riding around using the buggy with the Barkley name on it.
Ed then suggests going to A.J’s Café as their first stop in which Jarrod strongly agrees and as they make their way to Pier 9 using the crossroad of Broadway and the Embarcadero both Jarrod and Ed agree they should remain quietly from there on out and until they reach their destination they each just idly take in all the various scenery and activity they catch sight of as they pass along on the way.
Back at the house Heath is told to lie down on the bed. The doctor assists him with removing the sling from around his shoulder and while Heath lies down on the bed, Ray, Audra and Gene stand feet away observing everything as the doctor removes the bandage and begins his examination on Heath and his arm.
On the train Uncle Jim and Jim Jr as well as the men are looking out the windows as they are continuing on towards San Francisco each one pondering and wondering what is going on and what they will be facing once they reach there.
Reaching the waterfront Nick is looking at all the piers ahead of him not to mention the ocean to his left. As they reach A.J’s Café they bring the horses to a complete stop and upon dismounting hitch them up to the post outside and walk inside.
A.J who is behind the counter talking to a couple customers glances up and upon recognizing them, “Jarrod, Ed, welcome back.”
“Thank you,” Ed and Jarrod both reply simultaneously.
“I didn’t know that Ed here,” A.J. says, “Knew you until he mentioned he was staying at your house.”
“We’ve known each other,” Jarrod notes, “All of our lives.”
“So he told me,” A.J says.
“This here is my brother Nick” Jarrod introduces “And Ed’s brother Bill.”
“Hello,” he says to both of them who in turn return the greeting.
“Could I get you anything?” A.J. asks of them.
“Perhaps,” Jarrod replies, “A cup of coffee.”
And while waiting for the two customers to finish with what they are having A.J. goes to bring each of them a cup of coffee.
“Mmm,” Ed comments, “Good,” and slowly they each sip their coffee.
“Sorry to hear about your Mother,” A.J goes on to tell them.
“Thank you,” Jarrod replies.
After the two customers pay A.J and then leave, “Any news on her yet?” he asks them compassionately.
“Yes and no,” Jarrod replies, “We still don’t know who has her but we got a ransom note of where they want the money delivered. If you’re able to we could use your help.”
“I’ll do all I can,” A.J says, “What do you need?”
“For right now,” Jarrod explains, “We are in a bit of a hurry and need to break up some bills we have on us. Do you think you could help us with that? We need to make each bill into very smaller ones.”
“I could help you with some,” A.J says, “Not sure about all of them. How many do you have on you?”
“Between the two envelopes,” Jarrod answers, “10,000.”
“I definitely don’t have that much on me,” A.J. replies, “I could help you with a few of them?”
“How much is a few?” Nick joins in with.
“Maybe,” A.J. answers, “3,000. That includes what I have hidden in my safe. Hold on while I take a look.”
Exhaling heavily, “Where are we gonna get the rest Jarrod?” Nick asks.
“We’ll have to try a few more places,” Jarrod mentions.
As A.J returns with some smaller bills to swap them with, “Do you have any idea,” Bill asks, “Where we could go to break the rest down? Time is of the essence.”
“You could try,” A.J. replies, “Artie’s Pharmacy he may be of some use to you.”
“Thank you,” Jarrod says and upon them making their quick departure A.J tells them, “Tell him A.J sent you, he’ll be more than willing to assist you. However, be sure to talk to him once the place is free of customers.”
“We’ll do that,” Jarrod informs him as he and the others exit the café and go down the street to Artie’s Pharmacy.
Back at the house
Watching as the doctor does his examination on Heath, “Well Doctor,” Audra asks, “How is he?”
“He’s fine,” the doctor replies.
“How’s the arm?” Gene asks.
“I’m afraid,” the doctor answers, “His arm will be out of action for awhile and I do recommend that he rest for a few days.”
“A few days?” Heath mimics as he begins to get up on his elbows, “Yes,” the doctor replies, “A few days” as he keeps him from rising.
“It’s only a minor bullet wound,” Heath tells him.
“It is,” the doctor replies “But you do need to rest to help it heal. You have a very low fever. I also recommend,” writing a prescription on a piece of paper, “Someone pick up this prescription for you.”
“I could do it Doctor,” Ray offers taking it from him.
Waterfront
Walking in they catch sight of a couple teenage girls inside talking and drinking their sodas. “Hello,” Artie says to them who in turn return the greeting. He then asks, “Could I get you anything?”
“What do you have?” Ed asks, “We’re in sort of a hurry.”
“I have a wide range of items,” Artie tells him, “Many come in here and try my chocolate and vanilla sodas. Ask Kathy and Colleen here,” as he points to them.
“Is that right?” Bill asks.
Kathy replies, “Oh yes, the chocolate sodas are heavenly.”
Colleen mentions, “He makes the best sodas around.”
“But we better be going,” Kathy says, “Enjoy,” to them who in turn thank them as they get up and walk out.
“So,” Artie asks, “What could I get you?”
“Right now,” Nick mentions, “We’re in a bit of a hurry.”
“Perhaps another time,” Jarrod says, “But right now we need your assistance.”
“In what way” Artie replies.
“How long,” Ed asks, “Before you should get more customers?”
“That depends,” Artie replies, “Right now its late afternoon. I attract mostly the teen population but later on I get the older group.”
“Then we need to do this quickly,” Jarrod says, “A.J. suggested we do this while you’re alone.”
“What is it you need?” Artie asks.
“We need money broken down,” Jarrod says, “Into 50’s, 20’s and 10’s. And it’s very important we get it and we don’t have much time.”
“We also don’t,” Ed brings up, “Have that many places we know of to go to that would be able to help us.”
“And A.J,” Bill says, “Suggested that you would be our best bet.”
“How much we talking” Artie asks.
Nick replies, “7,000.”
As his eyes widen, “7,000” Artie asks, “Dollars?”
“Yes,” Jarrod and Nick reply simultaneously.
Part 396
“I may be able to help you with some of them,” Artie says, “And if A.J sent you then he must trust you enough to have you come to me.”
“He does,” Jarrod answers.
“Let me go see what I do have on hand,” Artie says, “And then we could take it from there.”
“Thank you,” Jarrod followed by Nick echoes.
As he goes to look to see what he has in small amounts of money “May I ask,” Artie asks, “Why you would need this much money broken up?”
“It’s personal,” Ed says.
“It’s best we keep it amongst ourselves,” Bill adds, “The less that know of it the better.”
“Very well,” Artie says.
As he begins removing money he has stored inside the safe making conversation, “You know,” Artie mentions, “It’s odd that you would need so much money broken down in such a way and so quickly that I wonder,” thinking back to the conversation he had with Sarah, Melanie and Sue Ann, “If this has to do with some kind of kidnapping.”
Watching as Jarrod to Nick and Ed to Bill exchange dumbfounded expressions, “Does it?” Artie then asks.
“If it does,” Nick replies, “How would you know that?”
“You wouldn’t happen to know a couple of girls that go by the names of Sarah, Melanie or Sue Ann would you?” he asks of them.
“We do,” Bill admits.
“They mentioned something about that briefly a couple days ago,” Artie says, “Would it have to do with any one of you?”
“Our mother,” Nick states.
“She’s been taken hostage,” Jarrod says, “And unless we deliver this money in the sequence they said to we’re not sure what they will do.”
“And,” Nick says, “We’re not taking any chances.”
“Sorry to hear that,” Artie replies, “And once again if A.J sent you to me then once again I must say he had good reason to. Do you have any idea of who kidnapped her?”
“No,” Nick barks, “If we did, we wouldn’t be here right now trying to get money broken down to be delivered by 6 pm.”
“And,” Ed says, “Were not from around here. Only Jarrod here is somewhat.”
“So, please if you don’t mind,” Nick snaps, “Will you hurry it up?”
“Sorry,” Artie says, “I am just trying to help make sense of it all is all,” and going back to counting out the money he finds himself having $4,000.00 available for them, “I don’t have the 7,000 as you requested but it seems I do have 4,000 of it however.”
“We’ll take it,” Jarrod replies, “And maybe with some luck they’ll take what we do have ready.”
“We’ll find out,” Bill mentions, “If not Jim should be here by 7:00, maybe a little after.”
“By then,” Nick says, “It may be too late,” and as they work on swapping the 4,000 in larger bills with Artie’s smaller bills, “We better make tracks.”
“Good luck,” Artie tells them, “Let me know how it turns out and if I should hear anything I will be sure to get the information to you.”
“That will be great,” Bill says.
“We’d appreciate that,” Ed notes.
“Thank you,” Jarrod then says as they quickly take the money and leave the store.
As they head back they discuss a game plan of what they need to be doing of when they make the delivery as well as more information regarding the children staying at the Dentons.
Meanwhile, at the missionary down in the cellar while Terry is busy still working on the bars of the window, Victoria continues pacing and thinking of how they could get out of the mess they are in while the rest of the men just idly watch them.
“I must say,” Robert brings up, “That I have to hand it to Terry. He keeps thinking he is able to find away out from using the window.”
“Talk about someone being persistent,” Ferdinand says, “He’s been at it for a day and a half and the bars still haven’t budged.”
“Well,” Victoria replies, “At least he’s trying to do something productive.”
“Well it’s no different than you,” Ferdinand brings up, “Pacing the floor the way you have been.”
“I gotta hand it to Mrs. Barkley,” Vernon says.
“What’s that Vernon,” Victoria asks.
“Your constant pacing,” Vernon says, “If any one paced as much as you did I am surprised you haven’t made a hole in the floor by now.”
“Too bad,” Dean replies “We couldn’t somehow use the floor as a way out of here.”
“Well if it was to do any good,” Victoria quips, “I would gladly do more of it.”
“If it was doing any good,” Paul notes, “I’d be right there alongside of you helping.”
“I’m surprised he hasn’t called it quits by now,” Vern notes, “I would have the first time trying it. It’s no use.”
“He is persistent I’ll grant him that,” Ferdinand says.
“It has budged,” Terry replies.
“I haven’t seen any sign of it,” Ferdinand says.
“You haven’t, but I have.” Terry mentions “I’ve just been keeping it to myself.”
“You have?” Paul asks, “Why haven’t you said anything to us?”
“Why should I?” Terry says, “You’ve done nothing but complain and criticize me with what I am doing.”
“He’s right,” Victoria mentions, “If you were a little less hypercritical then maybe he would’ve let you in on it.”
“And as soon as I,” Terry says, “See it loosening up just a little bit more I will let you in on it.”
“Then,” Robert notes, “Maybe we can get out of here.”
“That’s what I am hoping to do,” Terry replies.
“Maybe we should give you a hand,” Dean suggests.
“If you like,” Terry says, “And if we did work together it just may break free just a little bit faster and a little bit sooner.”
“Good idea,” Victoria replies.
As the men go to give Terry a hand, “Mrs. Barkley,” Ferdinand says, “While we’re doing that be extremely tuned into the door and if you should hear any kind of activity let us know immediately.”
“Don’t worry,” Victoria replies, “I will,” watching them as they begin assisting Terry.
Back at Jarrod’s Ranch
Upon returning to the ranch and as the brothers come in the doorway Eugene and Audra quickly come down the stairs and upon seeing them walk in, “Did you manage to get it?” Gene followed by Audra asks.
“We got it,” Nick announces, “Or at least most of it” as Jarrod grabs hold of the duffle bag supplied to them and places the money inside of it.
“Where’s Ray?” Jarrod asks.
“He went into town,” Audra answers, “To get medicine for Heath the doctor requested he get.”
“I’m surprised,” Ed brings up, “We didn’t run into him on the way.”
“How’s Heath?” Nick asks concerned.
“Doing alright” Audra answers.
“He’s asleep right now,” Gene mentions, “Doctor gave him something to help make him sleep for a little bit.”
“The doctor said he’s running a little low fever,” Audra answers, “And said for him to take what Ray brings back for a few days.”
“Very well,” Nick says, “Let him sleep.”
“What now?” Audra asks.
“We deliver it,” Nick mentions.
“You two stay here,” Jarrod informs them, “And keep an eye on everything. If we’re not here or back by the time Uncle Jim gets in, see if Ray will take one of you to pick him up at the train station and fill him in on where we went.”
“We will,” Audra and Gene vows.
Nick then asks, “Ed you ready?”
Taking the duffle bag from Jarrod, “Ready,” Ed announces.
“Let’s get started,” Nick tells him.
“Good luck,” they both tell them as they head out the door.
As they are standing outside the door, “How do you want us to do this?” Bill asks.
“You don’t have to do this,” Jarrod informs Ed.
“Yes, I do,” Ed replies, “We’ve been over and over it.”
“You do know where you’re going?” Nick asks.
“Nob’s Hill,” Ed answers.
“Do you know how to get there from here?” Nick asks.
“Not quite,” Ed admits, “I will just follow the instructions on the note here” holding up the piece of paper.
“Very well,” Nick says.
“Give us a few minutes head start,” Jarrod tells him, “And then begin.”
“Be careful,” Nick tells him.
“Same goes for you,” Ed replies as he watches them mount up and leave the ranch while getting the duffle bag situated on the horse’s saddle.
As Jarrod leads the way and glances over his shoulder he could see Nick to his right and Bill on the other side of him.
While en route to Nob’s Hill the three riders could see the outskirts of various cleared fields as well as some dense vegetation on both sides of the road. They catch sight of ranches with distant cattle grazing to their far left and then as they continue on to their far right they catch sight of a brook and then of a mountainous ridge that is surrounded by various boulders, neglected weeds that are six feet tall, then more trees, more wooded areas, along with other various forms of green vegetation beyond that.
“Where is Nob’s Hill?” Nick asks of Jarrod who replies, “We still have a ways to go yet.”
As they look at the other side of the brook they catch sight of a road that follows more wooded areas and noticing another field choked with more bushes and rife with weeds they continue on and notice that the terrain gradually rose and as it formed a rounded hill went up and over the center of the hill.
Meanwhile Ed is out on his own following the directions he was given on the paper going down Union Street, Hyde Street and as he reaches Pacific Avenue takes a left and continues on until he reaches Stockton Street.
After riding for a little bit going down the ridge and following the forest that took them to another trail Jarrod comes to a complete stop.
“What is it?” Nick asks.
“This should be it,” Jarrod announces and upon slowly moving towards it they follow the forest and coming up to a ranch that is somewhat worn down, “Are we here?” Nick asks as Jarrod once again breaks in his horse.
“We’re here,” Jarrod announces, “This is Nob’s Hill.”
“Do you see any sign of anybody?” Bill inquires.
Replying “Not thus far” Nick then as they proceed on they come up to some more weeds that have grown to the height of the bushes and are covering the bigger rocks and boulders.
A quick glance to their rear they didn’t see any sign of Ed or the abductors approaching or waiting anywhere nearby.
As Jarrod, Nick and Bill reach the bottom of the hill, “They said,” Jarrod brings up “They wanted it dropped off at Bingham’s Point. Bingham’s Point is all the way up the tip of this mountain.”
“They want it,” Nick asks, “Delivered all the way up there?” pointing with Jarrod answering “Apparently.”
Glancing up at the high rocky mountain “Talk about a steep climb” Nick whistling, retorts.
“I got to hand it to them,” Bill answers, “They certainly chose what appears to be an ideal spot for the drop off.”
“They obviously know the area,” Nick mentions, “Much better than any of us with the exception of Jarrod here.”
“True,” Bill replies.
“May I ask,” Nick says, “How are we or Ed for that matter going to get up there? The horses aren’t going to be able to make it all the way up there.”
“We’ll have to,” Jarrod insists, “Walk it from here.”
“Then,” Nick states, “Let’s get started” and as he and Bill follow alongside of Jarrod each of their stomachs begins churning in anxious anticipation.
Turning to Bill, “Bill,” Jarrod asks “How about you taking care of the horses and follow us up?”
“Certainly,” Bill replies.
As they dismount, “Remember,” Nick mentions, “We can’t do anything until we find out where Mother is. Once the drop off has been made and we see whoever it is ride off we need to be able to follow carefully behind them without being noticed so he could lead us to Mother.”
“Agreed,” Jarrod replies as he and Nick slowly proceed up the mountain while Bill takes care of hiding the horses in a safe place away from there.
Still following his instructions Ed now reaches Jackson Street and idly glances down both sides of the road trying to see if he could catch any sign of any type of movement. So far as much he could tell, he was all alone on the street.
As Jarrod and Nick are climbing the side of the mountain looking to their right for a perfect place one could hide, Bill after taking care of the horses looks to his left and sweeps high and low through the grass and bushes that follow his path.
Following his directions and upon reaching the southern horizon takes Ed to a field prior to entering the abandoned ranch and as he carefully moves ahead towards it he catches sight of a wooden fence which is partially hanging onto it’s side and as he proceeds on in he sees a barn, a shed to his left, a small corral and then a house while searching for Bingham’s Point and the peculiar brown tree hung where he’s suppose to be making the drop off at.
