“The FBI is in charge of that. The Thompson’s are in deeper than they thought. The last two kids…” Oscar looked at the file Timothy and James…they were taken from Mid Town Manhattan in NY. They took them across state lines.”
“Well.” Steve stood to leave. “I suppose we better be home when David is brought back to us.”
Jaime nodded as she followed him out the door.
“I wonder what his favorite food is.” Jaime wondered
“Why’s that?” Steve asked.
“Well, I’d like to make his favorite food for dinner.” Jaime explained.
“That’s so nice of you” Steve smiled.
“Well, it’s the least I can do. You know this is going to be very hard on David.” Jaime put her arm around Steve’s shoulder. “Maybe it would be a good idea if we had a child psychologist on hand.”
“That’s a great idea!” Steve shouted. “I’ll get Rudy on it right away.” He walked over to the phone and dialed Rudy’s office number.
“That’s a great idea Steve, I’m sorry I didn’t come up with it. I know just the person to call too. Do you want me to have him at the house when they drop David off?”
“No, I don’t think that will be necessary…just have him/her standing by.”
“I’ll have them in my office. Just call here.”
“I will, and thanks Rudy.” Steve hung up and turned to Jaime. “How about hamburgers for dinner, I mean all kids like hamburgers.”
Jaime nodded. “That sounds good.
At the Thompson houses the task force now led by Russ decided it was time to make their move, they had been waiting for Brian Thompson to get home from work. They watched as his car pulled into the driveway.
“Let’s go.” Russ cried into the data com. everyone made their move.
The task force surrounded the house as Russ walked up the steps and rang the door-bell….
“Can I help you?” Brian’s mother Joan asked when she opened the door. They were getting ready to leave town that night and didn’t relish company.
“I was wondering if I could ask you some questions.” Russ asked.
‘I’m sorry we’re getting ready to go out of town. We have a wedding to go to in NY.” Joan stated.
“I’m afraid not.” Russ pulled his ID from his pocket “I’m with the government we really need to talk.”
“Brian!” Joan shrieked “get the kids; let’s get out of here now!!!”
Brian came running, gun in hand.
“I wouldn’t” Russ pulled out his own gun. “Just stay right there….the house is surrounded.”
“I wonder how much longer it will be.” Steve looked at the clock on the fire place mantel.
“Just relax, it won’t be much longer.” Jaime assured.
“I hope you’re right.” Steve sighed. “Um…”
They were interrupted when the phone rang. Steve grabbed for it. “Oscar?”
“Just want to keep you posted.” Oscar began. “I just heard from Russ, Brian just got home from work they’re ready to make their move. Steve, you’re minutes away from being reunited with your son.” Oscar sounded elated.
“I hope you’re right pal.” Steve muttered.
‘It’s been almost nine years.” Oscar reminded. “I think a half an hour or less won’t hurt.” Oscar chuckled.
“Is the psychologist in Rudy’s office?” Steve asked.
“She sure is. Her name is Dr. Mary Masters.” Oscar informed.
“I hope we won’t need her. But in light of all that’s going on…the parents arrested the family split up…I mean I was hoping to let David continue seeing his brothers and sisters.” Steve noted.
“Don’t worry Steve. She’s here if we need her.” Oscar told him. “Why don’t you and Jaime come here? I understand this is where they are bringing all of the children. All the parents are coming here.”
As Russ was shutting the door of a transport car supplied by the FBI, a state car pulled into the driveway.
“Excuse me” Russ followed her up the porch steps where the children were assembled in the living room.
“I’m Cathy Healy I work for the Department of Children and Family Services. I’m here to take these children into custody” she stated matter-of-factly
“That won’t be necessary.” Russ interrupted.
“I’m afraid it is” Cathy stomped into the house with Russ close on her heals.
“Come on children.” Cathy smiled warmly at them. “We’ll find some place for you to stay till we can find suitable homes for you.”
Russ tried to stop her. “Miss Healy, are you aware of the fact that these children…all of them are kidnap victims. They need to be reunited with their true families…As a matter of fact…this is an FBI matter.
“I don’t care about that all I care about right now are these dear, dear children and how you have traumatized. You should have informed my office, we could have helped.
“We don’t need your help.” Russ argued. “We have notified all of the families they are on their way to the Federal Building right now to claim their children.”
“Well that will have to go through our office.” Cathy clicked her pen. “I’ll just take these children right now.”
“I’m afraid you can’t do that.” Russ argued as he held out his OSI ID.
“That’s not going to stop me.” Cathy snorted. “You can’t stop me from doing my job.”
Russ nodded “oh, yes I can” he replied. He walked over to the phone and called Jack Hanson. “Yeah she’s right here.” He handed the phone to Cathy “It’s Jack Hanson with the NSB
“Miss Healy is it?” Hanson barked.
“Yes.” Cathy replied.
“You are not…I repeat NOT to remove those children from that house till I arrive. Do I make myself clear?”
“I have a job to do…” Cathy argued.
“So do I!” Hanson shouted. “I’ll be there in five minutes.” He hung up on her and headed for the federal court house
“I’d do as he says.” Russ advised. “I mean it will take at least five minutes to get their clothes packed…right?”
“I never thought…they will need clothes…but if he’s not here by the time I’m ready to leave…well then I’ll just have to do what I have to do.”
She escorted the children to their rooms so they could pack a few of their favorite items.
True to his word Hanson arrived within five minutes. “Now Miss Healy,” He handed her the federal court order forbidding her to take the children and the Mark Russell and Jack Hanson had temporary custody of all of the children.
“Well I never.” Cathy clicked her heels and stomped out of the door.
As soon as all of the children were in either Hanson or Russ’ car they headed straight for the OSI building.
At the OSI five sets of parents sat in five different rooms waiting to be reunited with their children who had been stolen from them at the most sixteen years ago.
Brian’s parents paced the floor having the same reservations Steve had had when he first found out about David….
“How will he respond to us?” Brian’s father Todd asked.
“I don’t know…and I don’t care!” his wife Michelle exclaimed. “All I know is that I’m getting my baby back.”
“He’s sixteen Michelle; he’s not a baby anymore.”
“It doesn’t matter. Our son is finally coming home.” Michelle over come with all of the excitement began to cry
Across the hall Tommy and Tammy’s parents were having the same discussion. “I just can’t believe it.” Vince proclaimed. We are getting our kids back.”
His wife Mara nodded. She had been overjoyed when they told her but wouldn’t believe it till her babies were back in her arms. “They’re fourteen you know.” She told Vince.
Vince nodded. “I know. Do you think they’ll even want to see us?”
“I’ve been told they really have no choice at this point.” Mara replied. “It just boggles me that no one was able to find them before this.”
Vince nodded. “I know.”
In the office right next to where Mara and Vince were talking…Paul’s mother and grandparents talked. Paul’s parents had divorced a year after Paul had been taken. In fact both parents blamed the other for the kidnapping.
“Did you call Rick?” Taylor’s mother Blanche asked as they waited to be reunited with Paul.
“The FBI said they would take care of that…I suppose he’s going to want visitation once Paul is returned.” Taylor blinked back her tears.
“He doesn’t deserve it” her father Ray snorted. “If it weren’t for him…”
“Let’s stop with the blame game.” Taylor wiped tears from her eyes. “We were both arguing with each other in the park that day. Rick can see Paul whenever he wants.”
Blanche put her arm around her daughter “It will be ok…you’ll see.”
One the other side of them Timothy and James’ parents talked.
Tim Richards paced back and forth every few minutes he opened the door to see if Timothy and James were walking down the hall.
“Tim, sit down” his wife Ava suggested for the fifth time in as many minutes.
“I can’t Ava. Don’t you realize that at any moment out sons are going to walk through that door…”
“Of course I realize it. I can hardly contain myself. I just am not sure what they are going to think I mean…we are strangers to them. To them their parents were arrested…right in front of them. This isn’t going to be easy. They were only two months old when they were taken from us…”
Tim nodded “yeah, I know.” He sighed….
“Well.” Steve stood to leave. “I suppose we better be home when David is brought back to us.”
Jaime nodded as she followed him out the door.
