FOR THE LOVE OF DAVID (6)
“Thanks Oscar, I knew I could count on you.” Steve replied.
“I’ll also look into this alleged trip they are taking. And you’re right pal, they can’t take him out of this jurisdiction. Not without the court’s permission anyway. Chances are they have it, If that’s the case…I’ll have it changed.”
“Thanks again Oscar.” Steve hung up relieved with the fact that Oscar would handle everything.
“I want you on this one Russ, I want you watch that family as well as dig up any information you can. They are not to leave the City with David. Is that understood?”
Russ nodded. “Don’t worry Oscar I’ve got it all under control.” Russ assured.
Oscar thought a moment “Better yet. You concentrate on watching the family. I don’t want you to let David out of your sight. I have another investigator I want to handle the other end. If your around to much plus answering questions…it might alert suspicion. I’ll call Vern and Hess. They are my top investigators.”
Russ gave a wave and headed for his position in front of the Thompson home.
Steve was practically sitting on top of the phone when Oscar called back. “You can relax pal. I have Russ watching the house and Vern and Hess are working on the investigation end.”
“I’d like to be on the case.” Steve stated.
“You let us handle it.” Oscar gave a smile that Steve didn’t see “Let us take care of it.”
“Ok Oscar but you know me. I just can’t sit back…I mean especially when I’m involved.”
“I know but just sit tight on this one.” Oscar requested.
Steve was silent for a moment and for just a moment Oscar thought he had hung up on him. “Yeah ok Oscar” Steve finally replied. “You have until Saturday, that’s when my so called ‘visit is…Oscar I intend to keep him. I’d prefer to have it sooner…if possible.”
I’ll do the best I can pal.” Oscar assured.
Jaime was standing next to him when he hung up. “Oscar will handle it.” She tried to reassure.
“It’s kind of nice having a wife with bionic hearing.” Steve smiled. “I don’t have to repeat telephone conversations. I only hope he can handle this.” Steve sighed. “I don’t know what I’ll do if I lose him again.”
Jaime nodded. “You said something before Tom called. Something about something bothering you.”
“Oh it was just what we’ve been talking about actually.” Steve told her.
“Ok, so what do you want to do today?” Jaime asked.
“I want to take a drive out to the Thompson house I want to see if I can see my son…from a distance that is. They’ll never know I’m there.”
“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.” Jaime warned.
“I promise I’ll be a good boy. I won’t do anything rash.” Steve assured.
“Well I suppose we could just happen to drive by.” Jaime agreed. She got out the phone book and looked up the address for Brian Thompson. “Steve, they don’t live to far from here.” Jaime cried out. “They live right next door to THE FOOD MARKET on fifth…”
“THE FOOD MARKET…we shop there all the time.” Steve pointed out.
“I know” Jaime nodded. “I think we could use some groceries too, what do you think?”
“Huh…oh yeah, right we are running out of everything.” Steve followed her out to the car.
As the approached THE FOOD MARKET they passed right by the Thompson home. Several children were playing in the yard. It didn’t take Steve long to find which of the boys was his son. The boy looked just like him.
For just a moment Jaime was taken back. “My gosh Steve, I feel like I’ve gone back in time about thirty years. He looks just like you.”
“Yeah” Steve smiled.
Just then an elderly woman stepped out on the porch. “Paul, I need you to run to the market for me. Take David with you.” She turned to the other children in the yard. “The rest of you kids need to go on home. David and Paul need to go to the store for me.” She handed Paul a twenty dollar bill and a list. “Just what is on the list.” She called after the boys.
Steve was elated they were headed for the same market he and Jaime were going to. “Talk about luck.” He commented.
They watched as Paul took David’s hand and the two boys crossed the parking lot. They also saw Russ get out of his car and follow the boys into the store.
“Looks like Oscar has everything under control.” Steve responded. “I think I’ll go if for just a moment. After all we shop here too.”
In the store Steve and Jaime kept a safe distance from Paul and David. They stayed just close enough to get a good look at the boy.
“You are cutting it kind of close” a voice came from behind them. Steve whirled around…
“Thanks Oscar, I knew I could count on you.” Steve replied.
