Oscar removed his glasses and lowered his voice. “Because she was killed in an automobile accident six months ago…her husband…” again Oscar looked at the file. “Brian… has no idea that David is not his son…his wife never told him that their son died.”
Steve sighed. “This is going to be rough…on everyone.”
Oscar nodded. “Look Steve, this was thrown at you very fast. Why don’t you read through the file and then we’ll proceed with getting David returned to you.”
“I want this right now” Steve sighed. “But I think that for the sake of David…we’ll have to move very slowly.”
“I’m glad you see it that way.” Oscar nodded. “Give it time…give us time…You will have him back…I promise. Talk to your wife…talk to Jaime…see what she thinks…you need someone to talk to. I think she’d be a good listener.”
“I was planning on doing just that.” Steve turned to leave. “I’ll tell her as soon as I get home…”
“Um uh…you don’t have to. I took the liberty of calling her. All I told her was that you have some things you wanted to discuss with her. I kind of gave you a spring board so too speak.”
“Thanks Oscar’ Steve left and headed home

Jaime greeted him at the door. “Oscar told me everything…so you don’t have to. “Oh Steve I remember how awful it was for you.”
“It was, I have a feeling…it’s about to get worse…real fast. Jaime, this kid…my son isn’t going to want to have anything to do with me. He has a family…a father… brothers… sisters… How can I come in and take him away from it.”
“You’re right…he has a father….you. Steve he needs you as much as you need him. Sure, it will take some time. But you have enough love to make up for it.”
Steve nodded “you might be right.”
“I know I am. Sure, it’s going to be rough for a while, but once this boy sees what you’re really like….he’ll love you just the same as we do.”
“Oscar told me I’d feel better if I talked to you…he was right.”
“So, where do we go from here?” Jaime asked.

Steve held up the file Oscar had given him. “I guess I get to know my son first. I don’t even know if his ‘family’ knows.”
Jaime nodded. “Oscar said they would contact them in a couple of days.”
“That’s good” Steve agreed. “I just can’t wait for this to be over with.”
“I don’t blame you.” Jaime agreed.
Steve sat down and opened the file containing the information Oscar and Russ had gathered on his son.
Jaime sat next to him and tried to read what he was reading. As he finished reading on page he handed it to Jaime.
“How did they get a birth certificate on him?” Jaime asked as she looked closely at the first page Steve had handed her.
“I don’t know.” Steve shrugged. “Here…look at this.” He handed her the second page containing information on the other children.
“It looks like they have six other children besides David.” Jaime read the paper. “Brian Jr., he’s 16, Tammy and Tommy…they must be twins, they are fourteen….”
Steve nodded and continued. “Then a twelve year old named Paul. Another set of twins…
Timothy and James…”
“They are ten.” Jaime continued.
“And then David…He’s the baby of the family” Steve finished. “Jaime…I don’t know if I can take him away from this.”
Jaime moved closer to him “Steve…he deserves to know who his father is.” She reasoned.
Steve nodded “I guess you’re right…it just seems so cruel to do that to him.”
“And what his mother did to you wasn’t cruel?” Jaime interrupted. “Look, Steve. I know it’s not the boy’s fault…but He needs to be with his father. You know…this sort of thing happens more than you may realize…Sure…it’s going to be tough at first but in the long run… this is just what that little boy needs.”
Again Steve nodded. “I never thought of it that way. I think about him all the time Jaime. I always wondered where he was…was he being taken care of…what would have happened that night if I’d insisted that my son come home with me?"…
