Steve is reunited with his eight year old son...kidnapped when he was an infant
“…Did you hear me Steve?” Oscar looked at his friend sitting across from him.
Slowly Steve nodded. “I think so…do you mind repeating it?”
“Not at all” Oscar smiled. “We found him…we found your son…
“How…when…” Steve stammered. Then his mind raced back to that night nearly nine years ago now…
Steve paced the floor outside the delivery room. Every two minutes he glanced at his watch. ‘how long does it take to have a baby anyway.” He muttered getting more and more anxious by the minute.
Finally the nurse stepped through the delivery room doors. “Col. Austin” she called to Steve.
Steve stepped closer to her. “Yes”
“Col. Austin…you have a handsome boy. You can see him in just a few minutes.” The nurse smiled. “They’ll pass right by here on the way to the nursery.”
“Thanks…and how’s my wife?” Steve asked.
“The dr. will speak with you in a moment.” The nurse replied.
She walked away and Steve watched as the double doors opened again and another nurse pushed a crib through. “Col. Austin?” She asked
Steve nodded. He looked into the basinet. “Hey there sport.” Steve reached his finger in and the boy instantly grabbed it, holding it tight in his tiny fist.
“You wrestle with me…ok pal…not your mother….”
“Col. Austin?” Steve heard a voice next to him.
Steve looked up to see the Dr. standing next to him.
“Yes.” Steve replied.
“The nurse will take the baby to the nursery…you can see him in just a bit. We need to talk…it’s about your wife…my office is right down the hall.”
Steve watched as the nurse pushed the basinet down the corridor, then he turned to the Dr. “You said down the hall.”
The Dr. nodded. “Just follow me.”
Slowly Steve followed him down the hall.
“Please have a seat.” The Dr. pointed to a couch in the corner of his office.
Steve sat and looked up at the Dr. “How’s my wife?”
“I’m sorry Col. Austin. We did everything we could. We discussed this possibility when we discovered Kim was pregnant.”
“She had a heart condition.” Steve remembered.
The Dr. nodded. “We were prepared for anything and everything…but it all happened so fast…we just didn’t have the time we needed to react.”
Slowly the news sunk in. “You lost her?” Steve barely whispered.
The Dr. nodded. “I’m so sorry” he replied.
Steve sat for several more minutes while everything sank in. “What do I do now?” Steve asked.
“Do you or I suppose I should ask does your wife have any family who can help with the arrangements?”
“I’m sure her parents will help…as well as mine.” Steve tried to hold back the tears.
“Take all the time you need.” The Dr. patted his hand. “I’ll leave you to collect your thoughts it may take you several minutes.”
“What about my son?” Steve asked. “Can I take him home?”
The Dr. thought a moment. “In the morning…first thing” the Dr. assured.
Steve stood to leave. “I’ll be here around eight then.”
“Make it nine and you have a deal.” The Dr. counter offered.
“Ok then nine. I have some phone calls to make anyway.” Steve sighed.
“I understand. Please take your time.”

When Steve got home he walked around the house. He stepped into the nursery where he could see Kim painting the walls a light blue with small pink bunnies, yellow ducks and green frogs as a border.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be a boy…or a girl…so I thought this would be good.” Kim and smiled she had pink and blue paint smeared all over her face and she looked beautiful.
“It’s perfect.” Steve had replied. “I like it…I really do.”
“You’re not just saying that.” Kim walked over to him and kissed his cheek smearing some paint on him as well.
“No, I’m not just saying that…I think it’s cute.” Steve smiled.
Kim stepped over to the crib and pulled out a bag. “I bought the bedding for the crib too…it was on sale.”
“I like it already.” Steve laughed.

The image drifted…and Steve once again stood alone in the nursery. He walked over to the crib which was ready for its new occupant.
Slowly he stepped out of the nursery and headed down to his room where he sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the phone for nearly a half an hour before he picked it up and dialed his in-laws number.
Kim’s mom answered. “Hello.”
“Jenny? It’s Steve.” Steve fought to hold back the tears.
‘Yes Steve, what is it?” Jenny could tell something was wrong. “Is it the baby?” she finally asked.
Steve hung up. This was no way to tell a woman that her only child was gone. He got in the car and was over at their house in less than five minutes. Jenny threw the door open.
“Something is wrong Steve, tell us what happened.
Steve sobbed as he told them what had happened.
Jenny held tight to her husband John. The two of the wept with Steve “of course we all knew the risk.” John finally spoke.
“What about our grandson.” Jenny sniffed back the tears.
“He’s still in the hospital.” Steve told them. “They said I can pick him up any time after nine” he told them. “I’ll bring him straight over here.” Steve assured.
“We’d appreciate that.” Jenny cried.
“I still have to call my own parents.” Steve stepped toward the door. “If there is anything…anything at all we can do…let me know.” Steve said as he opened the front door.”
“We will. We need to make some arrangements.” Jenny was sitting on the couch.
“I’m sure mom and dad will help with that.” Steve assured again.
“I know they will.” John stood to let Steve out. “They are such lovely people.”
“Thanks” Steve replied. “You might want to take Jenny to a doctor” he suggested.”
“I just might do that.” John agreed.
Steve left and headed for home to call his own parents.

Mean while, at the hospital another scene was playing out that no one had expected.
“I’m sorry Mrs. Thompson, we did everything we could, but your baby just wasn’t strong enough to surrive.” The doctor explained.
“You’re lying!” Ava Thompson screamed. “You’re lying!! Get out of my room!” She screamed “Just get out!!”
The doctor left to get her a mild sedative.
Ava made her way out of her room. She padded down to the nursery and slipped inside. “There you are.” She cooed at the first baby boy she came to. “See mommy told them they were lying.” She reached in and lifted the infant out of the crib. “Come on, I better take you home before they discover that I’ve found you.”
The sign on the empty crib read Austin…boy…

The next day when Steve arrived…ready to take his new son home the hospital was in a panic a baby was missing and no one knew where he was.
The Dr. Greeted Steve at the entrance to the maternity ward… “Col. Austin. I’m sorry. Your son is missing. We don’t know how this happened.”
Steve was shocked and devastated beyond belief. “How…how?” he asked over and over again.
“We don’t know, we’re checking every possibility.” The Dr. reassured him.

And now…nearly eight years later Oscar sat across from Steve saying they had finally done what the hospital and police had not been able to do. Was it true…was he going to finally be reunited with his son stolen from him so many years ago…
FOR THE LOVE OF DAVID
