A NICE ROMANTIC EVENING
Steve and Jaime...or Steve and Cassie…you make the call.
Steve and Jaime...or Steve and Cassie…you make the call.
“Hi” he said as he stepped into the living room his arms loaded with roses on this their first Valentine’s as husband and wife.
She kissed him. “I’m so glad you’re home. I have dinner in the oven…it should be done in just a few minutes. “Come with me, we’ll put the roses in a vase.”
He followed her to the kitchen. He ached to hold her in his arms as she filled the vase with water then dropped the aspirin into the water before she carefully arranged the roses. “There” she smiled that is better, I mean we wouldn’t want them to wilt…now would we.”
He slowly made his way over to her and grabbed her in his arms. “You’re beautiful…did you know that?” He kissed her passionately on the mouth. “That’s only a taste of what’s in store for you after dinner.”
“Well, in that case…let’s make it a quick dinner.” As much as she hated to she pulled away from him so she could open the oven and check on dinner.
“Why don’t you go change, I’ll have dinner on the table by then.” She smiled.
“You know I hate to be away from you for that long.” He sulked as he headed back for the bedroom to change his clothes.

As she prepared the table for their romantic dinner her mind flashed back to that Valentine’s night a year ago no. It didn’t seem like it could be a year already, but it was…
He picked her up right on time. She knew he had just shaved because he smelled like Old Spice
“Hi” she greeted when she slipped into the passenger seat.
“Hi yourself” he smiled. “Did anyone tell you…you look beautiful this evening?”
“No, you’re the only one I’ve seen all day.”
“Well that’s too bad, because beauty shouldn’t be wasted on one person.” He reached over and squeezed her hand.
“Well I thank you kindly.” She gave his hand a squeeze back. “So where are we going for dinner?” she asked. Up until now he had been quite secretive about it.
“Oh, you’ll see” he smiled. “I’ll tell you this much though. It’s a very special place…and you’ll never forget this evening…anyway I hope you don’t.” He smiled lovingly at her.
They rode along the rest of the way in silence. She anticipating what the evening might bring…him with full knowledge took the opportunity and admired her beauty all the way to the restaurant.
When they got to the restaurant he stepped up to the maître d' “I believe I have a reservation. I asked for some place quiet…”
“Yes sir.” The maître d' smiled. “I took the reservation. Is this the young lady?”
He gave him a slight nudge and the maître d' gave a slight nod. “Yes sir…right this way.” He ushered them to a table in the back of the restaurant. “Here you are sir. The waiter will be with you in just a moment.”
The maître d' handed them their menus and then beckoned for the waiter. “Table 4”
The waiter walked over “may I offer you our best wine?”
He shook his head. “No, this evening calls for champagne. The best you have.”
“I’ll bring that right out to you.” The waiter disappeared.
“This is very nice.” She mouthed. “A nice quiet dinner…away from…well away from everything.”
“The best part…no one knows where we are” he stared at her over his menu.

The dinner was delicious but she knew he wasn’t’ finished. She watched as he fidgeted this way and that.
“You know I love you very much?” He finally said, his voice barely a whisper.
She nodded. “I feel the same way about you.”
“I’m glad to hear you say that.” He fumbled around a little more and then brought his hands up on the table in them was a small box.
“What’s this?” She tried to sound surprised.
“I was wondering if you would like to spend the rest of your life with me?” he asked.
“I would love to.” She wanted to throw her arms around him and kiss him right there.
“Well then, let’s do this the right way.” He opened the box. “Would you marry me?”
She took the ring and placed it on her finger. “I would love to marry you.” She quickly moved to his side of the table and kissed him lightly on the cheek.

That had been a year ago. Tonight she was the one with the news. She only hoped he was as happy with this news as she had been a year ago.
“What took you so long?” She asked when
“I decided to take a shower.” He told her.
“You should have hollered I might have been able to help.” She smiled.
He snapped his fingers. “Now why didn’t I think of that?”
She took the meatloaf out of the oven and sliced it. “Dinner is ready” she looked at him. “I have everything set up in the dining room.”
When he stepped into the dining room he saw that she had candles burning and everything else was on the table.
They spoke softly to each other while they ate. She knew the timing had to be just right to tell him he was going to be a father in nine months. She just didn’t want ruin the romance of the evening.
It was only after dinner was finished, the dishes were done and they were snuggled by the warmth of the fire in the fire place did she approach the topic.
“I have some news.” She started out slowly.
He held her close. He knew she had been to the Dr. that afternoon. “What did Rudy say?” He asked. He looked her in the eyes. “You’re not sick are you?” His expression showed fear.
“No…well yes…well…” she hedged just a bit. They had never really approached the subject of children. It had been just the two of them. ‘What if he doesn’t want children’ she thought.
He continued to stare into her eyes…trying to read her thoughts. “Is it…is it…is it bad news?” He finally was able to ask.
“Well” she spoke softly choosing her words carefully. “I guess that’s all in how you look at it.”
He was truly concerned now. “Just tell me” he winced waiting for the worst.
“How do you feel about being a father?” she asked.
“I guess I’ve never thought about it” he replied. “I suppose…when the time is right…”
“Well, I think the time is right.” She gave a weak smile.
“Are you trying to tell me you’re going to have a baby?” a large grin formed on his face.
Slowly she nodded. “I hated to ruin our evening but…”
“Ruin my evening…you’ve just made it” he beamed. “A baby…we’re going to have baby…I can hardly believe it.”
“I’m glad you’re happy. They say somewhere around the end of November.” She told him
“A Thanksgiving baby…maybe we’ll have a baby born on or around Thanksgiving. That would be wonderful. How are you feeling?” A sudden wave of concern came over him.
“I feel just fine. Anxious…but fine” she was so relieved he was happy. She had fretted about it most of the afternoon.

Later that evening…they went to bed both in their own thoughts of what their intended was going to be like.
